The Czech Minister of Justice has resigned following criticism over a donation from a convicted criminal. The donation, worth nearly €40 million in Bitcoin, was auctioned by the ministry to support crime victims and invest in prisons.
Minister Pavel Blazek stated that while nothing illegal occurred, he stepped down to avoid damaging the coalition government's reputation. Blazek claimed he was unaware of the Bitcoin's illegal origins, despite extensive investigations.
The donation came to light this week, with Czech media linking the Bitcoin to Tomas Jirikovsky, who allegedly operated a darknet marketplace selling illegal goods like hard drugs, paid for in cryptocurrency.
Prime Minister Petr Fiala expressed respect for Blazek's resignation, praising his responsible handling of the situation. No successor has been announced yet.
