Luís Montenegro has been reappointed as Prime Minister of Portugal following the early elections held on May 18. His center-right Democratic Alliance (AD) emerged as the largest party but failed to secure an absolute majority.

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa appointed Montenegro after consultations with multiple parties, indicating that the politician could rely on sufficient parliamentary support, according to a statement from the president. Montenegro is expected to present his government program soon.

If the plan fails to garner enough parliamentary support, a political deadlock could ensue. Under the constitution, new elections cannot be held for another year. These elections were the third in Portugal since 2022, following the collapse of the minority government in March.
